Q. In St. Petersburg we are currently experiencing white nights where the sun does not set. How do we fast and determine times of Suhoor and Iftar?
(Query published as received)
A. The ruling with regards to fasting in this situation is that the people of this area have two options:
a) They may adopt the fasting times (the time of sunset and dawn) of the nearest city that witnesses sunset and dawn during this part of the year.
b) They may adopt the times of their own city in which they had last witnessed sunset and dawn. For example, if the white nights occur during the month of June and July but there was sunset and dawn during the month of May, they will adopt the times of May for commencing and terminating the fast as per dawn and sunset time of Saint Petersburg in May.
(Raddul Muhtaar & Jedeed Fiqhi Masa’il)
The Muslims of Saint Petersburg should consult the local Muftiyat (official Islamic body) to reach a unanimous decision on which option to follow if these white nights occur during the month of Ramadaan.
