A man asked the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam): “O Messenger of Allah! Who are the friends of Allah?” He (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “They are those people whom when one looks at them is reminded of Allah.” [The Lives of the Sahabah by Maulana Muhammad Yusuf Kandhlawi]
There is a pair of best friends who are always together. They share their happiness and their sorrow, never leaving each other’s side. There isn’t a single occasion in the life of the other that they miss.
So, if you happened to see one of them alone, the first thought to cross your mind would be to inquire about the other one.
This is the relationship of the believer with Allah (subhana wa ta’ala). He who has taken Allah as his Wali (intimate friend) has such a relationship with Him that whenever he is seen others automatically think of Allah, the other of the pair.
