Q. I recently read a Qurbani advert wherein there was a Qurbani scheme for a foreign country. As encouragement to contribute towards this scheme, the advert quoted the Hadith, “Whoever revives a Sunnah will get the reward of a hundred martyrs.” Is this reward applicable for Qurbani in lands where Qurbani is not prevalent?
(Question published as received)
A. The Hadith in question is being misquoted and quoted out of context. It is important to understand the correct wording and meaning of the Hadith. Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (Radiyallahu Anhu) reports that the Prophet of Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “Whoever adheres to my Sunnah (way of life) at the degeneration of my Ummah will gain the reward of one hundred martyrs”(Mishkatul Masabih).
The word used in the Hadith is “Man Tamassaka bi Sunnati” which means, whoever adheres to my way of life. In other words, whoever adopts the Sunnah way of life (not just one individual Sunnah) and adheres to it at the degeneration of this Ummah, he will gain the reward of one hundred martyrs. It does not refer to reviving just one Sunnah or a few Sunnahs whereby a person will earn the reward of one hundred martyrs as is commonly misquoted.
Hence, to quote the Hadith as though one will gain the reward of one hundred martyrs for performing Qurbani in a remote place where Qurbani is not being performed is misleading.
