On sighting the moon of Ramadhan, the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Allah is the greatest! O Allah, Do make this moon arise with peace, faith, security, and Islam (obedience) for us and as a favour to us so that we may perform deeds which You love and which conform to Your Will.” (Addressing the new moon) “Our Lord and your Lord is Allah.” [Tirmidhi]
The transliteration of the Arabic Dua is: “Allahu Akbar. Allahumma ahhillahu alayna bil amni wa’l eemani wa’s salaamati wa’l islami wa’t tawfeeqi lima tuhibboo wa tardha. Rabbuna wa rabbuka’llah.”
Make an effort to sight the moon that ushers in Ramadhan. Look for it with eagerness and a chance to make this Dua on sighting the moon.
The Dua is made to Allah (subhana wa ta’ala). After completing the Dua, the moon is addressed and the statement “Our Lord and your Lord is Allah” is to make clear that we are not making the Dua of the moon, it is as much a dependent creature of Allah’s as we are. It is simply providing us with the occasion to make this Dua while it is only Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) Who can be asked of and prayed to. This much care has been taken to keep people away from Shirk (setting up partners with Allah).
Since this prayer is a wish we would like to have fulfilled for us every month of the year, we can try to sight the moon that commences each lunar month and make this Dua.
